| Title |
Rough road ahead / Baldy, [1971]. |
| Abstract |
The Clifford Baldowski cartoon depicts Gov. Jimmy Carter stepping off of the paved road onto a dirt road. He is carrying a briefcase and an olive branch. In front of him are signs that read "you are entering Hancock country" and "travel at your own risk." Behind him there is a van with an open door that is labeled "race relations." Explanatory note: The cartoon refers to an incident in which Sparta police bought submachine guns against the wishes of the African American county leaders. In retaliation, county leaders bought more weapons for the county. Jimmy Carter's personal intervention helped diffuse the situation. |
